You and Your Money vs. Savings and Your Money

You and Your Money vs. Savings and Your Money

Think about it. How often do you work yourself to the bone, only to watch your money disappear as fast as it comes? Bills, emergencies, and the very important but underrated indulgences—life always finds a way to claim what’s in our wallets. It can seem very much like a tug of war between you and your innermost desire to keep some money out of the reach of your constant and ever evolving circle of needs; this is where the largely discussed and oddly controversial topic comes into the picture, yes, you guessed it, savings! You guessed it, right? Anyway, it is a decision that forces you to pause, and for once stop reacting to the demands around your life laying constant claim to whatever naira you have. Savings urge you to reclaim control, and to say to yourself, “I need to do these things, but I also know that I’m building something bigger than today.”

Saving isn’t easy, no matter what those Instagram and Facebook gurus say. Savings is not glamorous either. But it’s real, and it’s powerful. It’s like planting seeds in soil that looks barren, trusting that one day, those seeds will grow into a tree that shelters you when life gets rough.

Why Saving Feels Personal

Saving isn’t just about money—it’s about self-respect. It’s telling yourself that you’re worth the effort it takes to create a better future. Every naira saved is a step toward freedom.

  1. Peace of Mind Hits Different
Imagine the relief of knowing that when life throws a curveball—an unexpected hospital bill, a broken-down car—you’re ready. No panic. No borrowing. Just quiet confidence. That’s what savings give you.
  2. Freedom to Choose Your Own Path
Think about the opportunities you’ve had to say no to because you weren’t financially ready. It stings, doesn’t it? Savings change that. They allow you to say yes—to travel, to invest in your dreams, to help someone in need.
  3. Breaking Free from the Hustle Cycle
We work hard, but without savings, we’re trapped in an endless cycle. Always hustling, always tired. Savings? They’re your ticket out—a way to step back and breathe, even if just for a moment.

The Reality of Saving

Let’s not sugarcoat it—saving means sacrifice. It’s choosing to delay gratification in a world screaming, “Live in the moment!” It’s walking past that shiny new gadget or resisting the urge to order takeout after a long day. It’s hard. But isn’t anything worth having a little hard?

And here’s the thing: You don’t need to start big. Start small—100 here, 1,000 there. What matters is consistency. With time, those tiny amounts add up. They become your safety net, your launchpad, your power. Let me tell you how I do mine, but please keep it a secret, I’m a little too old to be practicing this technique but it works. Ready? Here goes.
At the end of every month, I calculate my gross income and make some percentile deductions from income and distribute them to what part of my life needs them and wants them, but one thing is sure, I am never to touch a certain 30% in this calculation. Now the embarrassing part? I send that 30% into an account owned by an older family member for safekeeping because I know that by myself, well, let’s just say my savings will end up saving me before there’s a real need for it.

How to Make Saving Work for You

  1. Be Real About Your Why
Are you saving for your first car? A dream vacation? A rainy day? Get specific. Saving becomes easier when it’s tied to a vision you can see, taste, or touch.
  2. Celebrate Every Win
Saved 5,000 this month? Celebrate it. Those small wins matter. They remind you that you’re moving forward, even when it feels slow.
  3. Turn Saving into a Habit
Make it automatic. Set aside money every time you get paid, even if it’s just a little. Over time, it becomes second nature—like brushing your teeth or checking Instagram.
  4. Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself
Slip-ups happen. You’ll overspend sometimes, and that’s okay. Saving isn’t about being perfect; it’s about progress. Just keep going.

What Saving Really Means

Saving is hope. It’s faith in a future you can’t see yet but believe in anyway. It’s betting on yourself, your dreams, and your ability to weather life’s storms. It’s deciding that you’re worth the effort—not just for today but for all the tomorrows to come.

When you save, you’re not just building a financial buffer—you’re creating freedom. Freedom to dream, to explore, to live life on your own terms. It’s not always easy, but then again, the best things in life rarely are.

So start today. Not because it’s the “smart” thing to do, but because you deserve a life that’s bigger, brighter, and bolder than the one you’re living right now.
